About us

The Oving Clinic is a Centre for Musculoskeletal and Sports Injuries.
Originally established in 1984, the Oving Clinic has been run by Dr John Tanner and his wife Petra as
Co Directors since 1991.

The clinic

The Clinic offers specialist diagnosis, with some investigations on site, and treatment which varies from manual therapy, manipulation, massage and personalised exercise therapy to minimally invasive interventions for spinal disorders.

The Oving Clinic sits in a prime rural location in the village of Oving, just East of Chichester, with a relaxing atmosphere and easy parking opposite.

Our qualified and caring team of Practitioners work together to treat injuries and manage pain in all age groups arising from sports, work, leisure pursuits and simply getting old. These include back and neck pain, sciatica, and whiplash together with other musculoskeletal conditions such as disc prolapse, joint pain, tendon problems, scoliosis, ankylosing spondylitis and arthritis.

The Clinic has been registered as a Day Case Facility by the Care Quality Commission since 1992. We are regularly assessed by the CQC. At our last inspection we met all standards.
Our clinical governance is provided by Prof. N Webborn, Sports

Philosophy of care

Our aim is to help people of all ages to recover as fully as possible from pain, discomfort and disability associated with problems of their musculoskeletal system (spine, muscles, nerves, tendons, ligaments, fascia and joints), and to prevent their recurrence wherever possible.

We will provide a personal and professional service to all our patients in a friendly and welcoming environment. We will respect our patients’ privacy, dignity and confidentiality at all times.

Our practitioners will treat patients by safely applying tried and tested techniques to restore the optimal functioning of the body and so enhance its ability to heal.

All practitioners at the Oving Clinic keep abreast of developments in their areas of expertise so we are able to offer the latest technology and treatments available.

Our practitioners will take a holistic approach to patients’ wellbeing by listening to their needs and concerns and giving advice on exercise and lifestyle, stress management and nutrition. Our team of practitioners will work together in cases where it is considered the patient would benefit from a multi-disciplinary approach to treatment.

All patients can expect prompt appointments, friendly and caring staff, and comfortable surroundings. Our excellent on-site facilities ensure we are able to offer fast and accurate diagnosis and treatment to get patients back to optimal health in the quickest possible time.

we offer

Musculoskeletal
medicine

Is the diagnosis and treatment of spine, joint and soft tissue disorders which can be managed without surgery. It embraces the whole field of locomotor disorders and dysfunctions covering nerve disorders, rheumatological problems, chronic pain and arthritis.

Sports and Exercise Medicine

Is a relatively new specialty which covers injuries and overuse problems sustained in sport, team medicine, public health problems such as obesity and exercise medicine for chronic disease and the general population. Physical activity is now recognised as one of the most important issues in lifestyle medicine.

Physiotherapy

Physiotherapists are trained to do a full assessment of musculoskeletal dysfunction. This includes elements that might influence any predisposition to injury and effect speed of recovery such as degeneration, age, balance, coordination, psychological and occupational factors, sports and exercise issues.

Treatment will often be a combination of manipulation and other manual techniques to influence the body’s biomechanics and so optimise recovery. Acupuncture may sometimes be included. Together with this, a graded programme of specific exercise will be instituted to regain the ability of the injured tissues to resist strain and prevent

Osteopathy

Osteopathy is a system of diagnosis and treatment for a wide range of medical conditions. It works with the structure and function of the body, and is based on the principle that the well-being of an individual depends on the skeleton, muscles, ligaments and connective tissues functioning smoothly together.

To an osteopath, for your body to work well, its structure must also work well. So osteopaths work to restore your body to a state of balance, where possible without the use of drugs or surgery. Osteopaths use touch, physical manipulation, stretching and massage to increase the mobility of joints, to relieve muscle tension, to enhance the blood and nerve supply to tissues, and to help your body’s own healing mechanisms. They may also provide advice on posture and exercise to aid recovery, promote health and prevent symptoms recurring.

Oving Foot and Ankle Services

The foot and ankle service at the Oving clinic uses cutting edge modern treatments to assess and treat problems affecting the foot and ankle. Our specialists have a high quality diagnostic service including a visiting standing CT scanner, and ultrasound to provide state-of-the art imaging of lower limb conditions. Furthermore our facilities allow the highest level of non-surgical treatments including focused Shockwave therapy for conditions such as plantar fasciitis and Achilles tendinitis.

We work closely with specialists in musculoskeletal medicine and biomechanical podiatrists. We have a fluoroscopy suite for injections and minor procedures to help treat the myriad of foot and ankle conditions. Where surgery is ultimately necessary Mr Dawe can perform this at one of the local private hospitals (Nuffield Chichester or Goring Hall). We have access to rehabilitation and physiotherapy through the clinic’s experienced physiotherapists, meaning we can support you through each aspect of your care.

Rheumatology

Rheumatology is the branch of internal medicine that deals with diseases presenting primarily in the musculoskeletal system (bones, joints, muscles and tendons). The range of conditions under this heading is wide and varies from “wear and tear” problems such as osteoarthritis of the fingers, knees and hips to complex immune diseases with potentially multiple internal organ effects. The common conditions treated include: Rheumatoid Arthritis, Polymyalgia Rheumatica, “AS”, “SLE” and Gout. They are usually described simply as “arthritis” and diagnosing them apart is a key to successful treatment. These conditions are managed in an out patent setting usually with care shared between specialist and GP.

Since arthritis is common, specialist services are often in high demand. Also, by it’s nature Rheumatology overlaps strongly with musculoskeletal (MSK) medicine. Adding the availability of local specialist diagnosis and care for these conditions to Oving Clinic’s established expertise in MSK diagnosis and treatment provides an almost unique combined, specialist service for these common aliments right on the doorstep in Oving and West Sussex.

Active Release Technique

Petra has trained in Active Release Technique under Dr. Mike Leahy for the last 10 years. ART is currently the preferred treatment at the ironman triathlon events in the USA. Petra is full body and biomechanics qualified and spends some time every year with Dr.Leahy updating her

Hand and Wrist surgery

This involves the medical and surgical management of common conditions like carpal tunnel syndrome, Dupuytren’s contracture of the palm by needle fasciotomy, osteoarthritis at the base of the thumb or wrist, trigger finger, ulnar nerve entrapment at elbow or wrist, benign lumps, ganglia, and more complex trauma of the hand and wrist. Here at Oving clinic we can perform some of simpler procedures such as joint injection under image guidance where necessary, needle fasciotomy and other outpatient procedures.

Pain Management

Pain is a universal experience. At best it protects us by alerting us to danger and injury, at worst it becomes detached from this purpose and comes to dominate daily life and health.  Pain is a complex experience.  It is not a measurable commodity, rather a perception of the brain and nervous system so can be affected by many factors and have many causes and origins, not always disease or injury.  However, the majority of common chronic (long-term or persisting) pain problems arise from wear and tear or degeneration of the Musculo-Skeletal system and particularly the spine.  There is no single way of managing spinal pain and so multiple options are required: psychological, medical (drugs and medicines), physical therapies and rehabilitation and interventions (injections and related techniques).

Both Dr Tanner and Dr Hammond have specialised in interventional diagnosis and treatment of spinal (and joint pain and muscular pains) and trained in the technical standards of the Spinal Intervention Society, one of the most senior international scientific organisations in the field.  Both teach and lecture internationally on behalf of the Society.   The philosophy of interventional care is always precision diagnosis leading to definitive treatment wherever possible in combination with expert rehabilitation and physical therapy.

With the in-house day-case X-ray screening injection theatre, Oving Clinic is ideally suited to delivering these high standards of expert care, locally and economically for the benefit of patients.
