A guide to collagen biostimulator treatment with Dr Etienne Raffner at The Oving Medical Clinic If you are exploring ways to soften facial folds while keeping your appearance recognisably yours, you may have come across collagen-stimulating injections. JULÄINE™ of Sweden, often searched for as Julaine, is a poly-L-lactic acid or PLLA biostimulator designed to encourage your skin's own collagen production over time. At The Oving Medical Clinic near Chichester, Dr Etienne Raffner offers Juläine as part of a personalised approach to facial aesthetics. A consultation helps establish whether this gradual treatment suits your anatomy, medical history and goals, and how it compares with other options. Considering Julaine treatment in West Sussex? Arrange a consultation at Oving to discuss suitability and your treatment plan. What is Juläine of Sweden Juläine is an injectable treatment developed by Nordberg Medical in Sweden. It contains biodegradable PLLA microspheres and uses the manufacturer's LASYNPRO™ technology. It is described as a collagen biostimulator or skin bio-activator because it is designed to stimulate a tissue response that supports new collagen formation on a non-inflammatory pathway within your skin. [1, 2] The manufacturer's stated indication is correction of nasolabial folds in immunocompetent adults. These are the folds that run from the sides of the nose towards the corners of the mouth. Suitability depends on what is contributing to the fold, including skin changes and the support of surrounding facial tissues. Dr Raffner has developed his own protocol which is adapted bespoke to the patient and indications and includes other areas of the face including temples, neck, under eyes and more. How a PLLA collagen biostimulator works Collagen is one of the structural proteins that helps give skin its strength and support. Ageing and environmental factors, including sun exposure, change the skin's collagen network and can contribute to lines, folds and reduced firmness. After injection, Juläine's microspheres are gradually broken down and absorbed by the body. The treatment is intended to encourage collagen production during this process. The desired cosmetic change develops over weeks and months, rather than being fully visible on the day of treatment. Early swelling or fullness should not be mistaken for the final result. Photographs and follow-up assessment help distinguish temporary changes from the longer-term response. How Juläine differs from dermal fillers and skin boosters Many hyaluronic acid dermal fillers are used to add volume or definition directly. Juläine places greater emphasis on a gradual collagen-stimulating response. Collagen formation can also change tissue volume and contour, so the treatment still needs careful planning. Skin boosters are a varied group, often used with a focus on hydration and skin quality. They are not interchangeable with PLLA biostimulators. The right choice depends on the concern being treated, rather than on which product is newest. Who might consider Juläine treatment Juläine may be worth discussing if you are an adult concerned about nasolabial folds and would prefer a gradual approach to improvement. You should be comfortable allowing time for a response and attending the recommended reviews. It is not a substitute for facelift surgery where substantial tissue laxity is the main concern. It also does not treat pigmentation or facial redness in the same way as light-based treatments. Assessment should identify the cause of your concern before deciding on a procedure. What happens during your consultation and treatment Dr Raffner will discuss your concerns, examine your face and review your medical history, medicines, allergies and previous aesthetic treatments. He will also carry out a skin assessment using the Observe 520X skin analysis machine to help guide treatment concerns and monitor progress. You can ask about expected improvement, limitations, alternatives, costs and the possible need for further treatment before deciding whether to proceed. If treatment is appropriate, the planned areas are agreed and the product is prepared for injection. Discomfort can occur, and options for comfort will be discussed. You will receive aftercare guidance and a review plan tailored to your treatment. How many sessions are needed and when results appear The manufacturer's guidance describes a course of up to three sessions, spaced two to four weeks apart. Your individual plan will depend on assessment, response and the current product instructions. A course should not be assumed to be necessary for everyone. Visible changes are gradual. Manufacturer information suggests that cosmetic improvement commonly develops around two to four months after treatment, with further changes possible over time. The degree and timing of improvement vary; an immediate or guaranteed result should not be expected. The manufacturer describes benefits lasting beyond a year in some patients. That is not a fixed duration for every individual. Review appointments help assess the response and whether any later treatment is appropriate. What the published evidence tells us A 2026 prospective study of 36 women reported improvements in nasolabial fold severity over six months, alongside findings consistent with collagen stimulation. It was a small study without randomisation or a control group and received manufacturer support. The findings are encouraging but do not establish superiority over other treatments or guarantee an individual result. Larger comparative studies and longer follow-up remain important and are currently in place. [3] Recovery and aftercare Redness, tenderness, swelling and bruising can occur after injection. Many local reactions settle over a few days, although recovery varies. Allow for visible bruising when planning treatment around work or social events. Follow your clinician's instructions on gentle massage and skin care. The product aftercare guidance advises avoiding sunlight and UV exposure until initial redness and swelling settle, and avoiding very high or low temperatures. Discuss the timing of laser treatments or chemical peels with your practitioner before combining them with Juläine. Risks and when treatment is unsuitable Juläine is a medical injectable and carries risks. In addition to bruising, swelling and discomfort, complications can include infection, allergic reactions, persistent lumps or nodules, inflammatory reactions, scarring or changes in skin colour. Very rarely, vascular complications can cause tissue damage, permanent visual loss or stroke. These risks and the response to a complication form part of the consultation and consent discussion. The product consent information lists pregnancy, breastfeeding, age under 18, immune deficiency, active skin infection or inflammation, allergy to a component, bleeding disorders or anticoagulant treatment, and a tendency to keloid or hypertrophic scars among the contraindications. Tell your clinician about all medicines and health conditions. Do not stop prescribed medication to have aesthetic treatment unless discussed and documented by your aesthetic doctor or GP. Frequently asked questions about Julaine treatment Will Juläine make my face look overfilled? The aim is gradual improvement planned around your existing features. However, collagen stimulation can alter tissue volume and contour, and outcomes vary. Discuss the degree of change you want, and what you would prefer to avoid, before treatment. Can Juläine be dissolved like a hyaluronic acid filler? PLLA is not a hyaluronic acid gel and cannot be dissolved in the same way with hyaluronidase. Its effects develop over time, so careful selection, treatment planning and follow-up are important. Can Juläine be combined with BBL HEROic or MOXI? These treatments address different concerns and may form part of a broader plan. They should not automatically be booked together. The sequence and interval need clinical planning, taking account of the product guidance, skin recovery and the proposed laser or light treatment. Dr Raffner does stack BBL HEROic and MOXI laser treatments with Julaine if indicated and desired. These stacked treatments are very popular and have excellent synergistic effects on impactful results. How much does Julaine treatment cost? The total cost depends on the treatment plan and number of sessions recommended. Ask for a written quotation, including the course cost and review arrangements, before deciding to proceed.
